How Strong Is Ambien?

I've never used any sleep medications, but I've been having a hard time stay asleep lately mainly because my roommates are extremely loud. My friend offered to give me one of his 10mg Ambien pills to help me go to and stay asleep. How effective is it? Will it knock me out or just make me drowsy? Will I stay asleep even with all the noise? What if they move me around or something, will I still stay asleep? I only plan on taking this once or twice, just FYI.
