Can I put a Pyrex container in a pot of hot water? (see below)?

I want to make rosewater for a friend's birthday present. If I had a big soup pot, and put a brick in it, and placed the Pyrex on top of the brick, is it relatively safe? Can I not worry if I simmer water underneath the Pyrex (it won't touch it)?
